Loss of council job adverts “devestating” Scotland’s print media

The Scottish and UK government must do “everything in their power” to safeguard the future of the Scottish press, according to a Commons report.

The Scottish affairs committee found that restructuring of industry, public sector competition and workplace stress place risk on the quality of the Scottish press.

In their report on the crisis in the industry, MPs said the newspaper industry is an “integral part of Scottish culture”, valued by its readers and by the institutions it scrutinises.

But despite Scotland’s competitive market for newspapers, profits are down because of the decline in print circulation.

The committee’s report found that moves by councils to advertise public sector jobs on relevant websites had created a “devastating impact on traditional print media”.
