Former Shadow Lord Chancellor Lord Kingsland dies aged 67

Christopher James Prout, Baron Kingsland, died yesterday from a pulmanory embolism. He was 67.

The Conservative party frontbench spokesperson for constitutional and legal affairs, he was raised to the House of Lords as Baron Kingsland, of Shrewsbury in the County of Shropshire, in 1994.

He served as Shadow Lord Chancellor from 1997 to 2008.

He was an MEP from 1979 until 1994, leader of the Conservative group of MEPs from 1987 to 1994 and Vice-chair of the European People’s Party Parliamentary Group from 1992 to 1994.

The Daily Telegraph said:

“Once described by a parliamentary sketch writer as a “skinny, bald brain-box”, he used his extensive knowledge in recent years to repeatedly challenge Labour’s reforms of the House of Lords.

“Despite his extensive Westminster duties, the former Sevenoaks School pupil continued to sit as a Crown Court judge.”
