Former Commons Deputy Speaker Lord Murton dies aged 94

A Conservative member of the House of Lords has died, the Lord Speaker told peers yesterday.

Henry Oscar Murton, Baron Murton of Lindisfarne, was born in 8 May 1914.

He served as MP for Poole from 1964 until 1979, when he was created a life peer.

Lord Murton was Deputy Speaker of the Commons from 1973 until he stood down from the lower House.

He also served as a government whip in Ted Heath’s government.

Yesterday at the start of business The Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman, said:

“My Lords, I regret to inform the House of the death yesterday of Lord Murton of Lindisfarne. On behalf of the whole House, I extend our condolences to the noble Lord’s family and friends.”
