A Conservative MP is to table a motion of no confidence in the Speaker, Michael Martin.

Douglas Carswell announced the move on his website.

Mr Martin, who represents Glasgow North East, has been targeted by Mr Carswell before.

In August 2008 he called on him to resign after newspaper reports about his expenses.

Over the weekend The Daily Telegraph reported on the expenses of dozens of MPs, including the Speaker.

The paper alleges Mr Martin hired an executive car with driver to take him to appointments in his constituency, including a visit to his local job centre.

“Enough is enough,” Mr Carswell, the MP for Harwich and Clacton, wrote on his website.

“I’ve drafted the text of a motion for the Speaker to quit, and to be replaced by a new Speaker with a mandate to clean up the Commons. I’m consulting the Commons Table Office for advice on it.

“I’m also starting to canvass for support for it from colleagues.”

He later revealed that that Table Office has approved some text for a suitable motion.
